1 Degree Gridded Current Statistics

Outline of 1 Degree Gridded Current Statistics

This statistic is the one (every one month, latitude/longitude 1 degree unit) of the surface ocean current data extracted from GEK and ADCP of the sea around Japan. Data between 1953 and 1994 is used for the statistical processing.
The average current speed and current direction of the specified month are displayed with an arrow. When you will select the “balloon display” and put the mouse on the map, the average current speed value, etc. of the same grid are displayed.

Average current speed and average current direction
Displays vector average current speed and current direction of every 1degree grid.
Maximum current speed and maximum current direction
Displays maximum current speed and maximum current direction in the observation data of every 1degree grid.
Stability
This is defined under the (vector average current speed/scalar average speed) x 100 (%) of every 1degree grid.
This is being used as one of the indicators to determine whether the direction of flow of the ocean current is stable.

In addition, please note that the reliability of these values depends on the number of the samples (the number of the observation data).
