About the observation data
We are publishing the observation data provided by the Institute of Cetacean Research. The data was converted to the JODC standard format (FETI format) at JODC.The observation data includes three types: XBT, XCTD, and CTD, which can be downloaded from the links below.

Observation data format
The format is primarily based on the JODC standard format, but there are the following points to note:- The "weather" in the header record has been converted to WMO Code 4501, but if conversion is not possible, a blank is set.
- The "vessel code" in the header record is set to a blank if it cannot be converted from the ship name.
- The "observation institution code" in the header record is set as "31110" which has beennewly established for the Institute of Cetacean Research.
- The comment record includes the provided "ship name," "navigation number," "number of data records," "weather," and "observation equipment name (Probe)" = No CTD =. If the "weather code" or "vessel code" in the header record is blank, please refer to the comment record.
- The "data accuracy flag" in the data record is set to the values provided by the Japan Whale Research Institute (see the table below).
Flag | Definition |
---|---|
2 | Acceptable measurement. |
3 | Questionable measurement. |
4 | Bad measurement. |
9 | Not sampled. |
