Introduction

In the Basic Plan on Ocean Policy, which was established in 2008, it is described that Japanese government promotes the comprehensive management of ocean and the integration of marine-related information for sustainable use of marine resources and spaces, over which Japan has jurisdiction.

And the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11 caused extensive damage to vast area, especially in the coastal area of Eastern Japan, and had a broad impact all over the nation. In order to recover and reconstruct the lives of people in the disaster area effectively, it is pointed out that the promotion of the comprehensive management of ocean by government is important. Therefore, the integration of marine-related information is getting still more important.

Japan Coast Guard has participated in the international Oceanographic data and information exchange (IODE) since its beginning, and has been implementing the compilation, management and distribution of marine-related information widely, as well as the publication of nautical charts. These activities are expected to perform a great role in the integration of marine-related information.

In 2011, the 50th anniversary of IODE, it is very useful to invite the experts of marine-related information and the comprehensive management of ocean from various countries and exchange the idea for ocean policy. We, Japan Coast Guard would like to hold the international symposium to share the future direction for the comprehensive management of ocean and the integration of marine-related information as well as the survey of potential needs in various fields e.g. marine-related industries, marine-resources management and marine-environment protection under the auspices of Ocean Policy Research Foundation (OPRF), Japan Hydrographic Association (JHA).
