Training Courses

1st NOWPAP - NEAR-GOOS Joint Training Courses on Remote Sensing Data analysis in the Northwest Pacific Region (Provisional plan as of 9 Feb. 2007)

The Special Monitoring & Coastal Environmental Assessment Regional Activity Centre (CEARAC), one of the four Regional Activity Centres (RACs) of the Northwest Pacific Action Plan (NOWPAP), and the North-East Asian Regional - Global Ocean Observing System (NEAR-GOOS) are planning to conduct intensive training courses on the remote sensing data analysis in the Northwest Pacific Region. The courses will consist of lectures by specialists and hands-on practical sessions on the analysis of satellite data. The courses will provide an overview of remote sensing of ocean colour with special emphasis on applications of ocean colour relevant to the NW Pacific.

Objective:
To contribute to capacity building for monitoring and assessment of marine and coastal environment in the NW Pacific Region through providing technical assistance of ocean remote sensing techniiques.

Expected Participants:
The courses are targeted at postgraduate students, professional researchers and loacal government officers working in the areas of marine sciences and coastal-zone management in the Asia-Pacific Region. Applications from advanced undergraduates may also be considered.

Courses Outline:
Topics to be addressed will include:
Lectures - Satellite oceanography, sensor characteristics;
Hands-on practice sessions - Operation of remote sensing software, case studies for open ocean and coastal environment.

By the end of the training, participants will acquire the following knowledge and skills on:
utilication methods for the remote sensing data in the open ocean and coastal renvironment.
advantages and limits of the use of remote sensing in marine and coastal environment.

Duration:
Duration of the training will be 5 days in summer (late Aug. to early Sept.) 2007.

Location:
Nagasaki, Japan.

Class Capacity:
The maximum number of the trainees will be around 20.
