PURPOSE of GODAR-WESTPAC

To rescue and make available marine data from the WESTPAC region that is in danger of being lost.

What kinds of risk are there?

Oceanographic data will be lost by degradation of recording media or disaster or retirement of researcher who know how to access the data

>> This purpose is very close with the fundamental of IODE and IOC.

·                      The IODE system has been established in 1961 to :

"enhance marine research, exploration, and development by facilitating the exchange of oceanographic data and information between participating Member States."

·          The IOC of UNESCO was founded in 1960 on basis of the recognition that,

"the oceans, covering some seventy percent of the earth's surface, exert a profound influence on mankind and even on all forms of life on Earth... In order to properly interpret the full value of the oceans to mankind, they must be studied from many points of view. While pioneering research and new ideas usually come from individuals and small groups, many aspects of oceanic investigations present far too formidable a task to be undertaken by any one nation or even a few nations."

Therefore, we expect the followings through the GODAR-WESTPAC project.

·                     Enlightenment of the IODE system in the region

·                     Improvement of knowledge and skill related the IODE activities at the data centers in the region

·                     Establishment of cooperation in the region for the project
