Objectives

It has become well recognized that the Japan Sea is a miniature of the world oceans, being very sensitive to environmental changes due to its small volume and high primary productivity. Climatic changes in the northern Japan Sea could easily cause perturbation in the abyssal circulation system of the sea, as reflected in temporal variations of chemical tracers of deep and bottom waters.

This study aimed at detecting such temporal variations in detail by conducting CTD-hydrocasts to take seawater samples from surface to bottom in the Japan Sea including the Korean EEZ for the measurements of major chemical components, trace elements and various isotopes, in good collaboration with Korean scientists on board Tansei Maru. This cruise was carried out not only as a part of the CREAMS/PICES program, but as a part of Asian-GEOTRACES, an International Study of the Marine Biogeochemical Cycles of Trace Elements and Isotopes.
