How to Access to JODC

Marine Information Service Office

The Marine Information Service Office has been established in JODC to assist users in providing marine information and data archived at such as water temperature, salinity, ocean current, tidal current, tide and bathymetry, as well as in replying to questions related to oceans and seas. The references, nautical charts, hydrographic bulletin, other publications provided by the domestic and international agencies are also available.

Beside the services, inquiries on information for marine leisure made by telephone calls or letters are also acceptable.

For the local users the regional marine information service offices have been set up at each regional headquarters of Japan Coast Guard.

The service is free of charge but request from non mutual data exchange or commercial users will be charged by Japan Hydrographic Association under a cost recovery basis, this is, at a cost related to the labour and materials, but there is no charge for the actual data.

Reference Services

Bibliographies and atlases are displayed and stored on the table or in the book stand so that anyone is able to refer them in the office, but not able to lend. The reference is classified into next 3 categories:

JODC products produced from JODC data holding such as statistic of temperature, salinity, ocean current, wave etc.
research reports, data reports, atlases issued by marine research agencies, universities, institutes including the international
nautical charts, hydrographic publications issued by Japan and foreign hydrographic departments.

Procedure to Get Reference Services

Reference services will be made freely, after users visit at the office and fill up a register form.

Providing Copies of Data

JODC data and information products and services are available on request to all users on magnetic tapes, floppy disks, CD-ROMs, microfiches, or copies of original sheets. Requests may be submitted by letter, telephone or visit to the Marine Information Service Office.

Users may directly inquiry to any of the following offices by letter, telephone or visit. Their personnel are experienced in providing consultation to users and are accustomed to working together to fulfill users' requests.
