General

Column separation character
First line: Column Labels
  1. Standard header labels are : Cruise, Station, Type, mon/day/yr, hh:mm, Lon(E), Lat(N), Bot. Depth[m]
  2. Each column for a data variable has an optional quality-flag QF
  3. The instrument code is attached to 'Data Type'.
2nd unit last line: Data Lines
  1. Each line contains metadata and data for one observed level.
  2. The cruises are arranged for each vessel and each observation period of extracted data. The cruise number is attached for each cruise.
  3. The Station Type is a sigle charater string. It is B for stations of about 250 levels or less and C for stations of 250 or more.
  4. If Bot. Depth is not available, use 0 (zero) in this field.
Quality flag columns
  1. Quality flags are single digit integers : 0 = good, 1 = unknown, 4 = questionable, 8 = bad.
  2. Error flag for observation information in FETI format are translated into Quality flag for Data Type in ODV spreadsheet as follows.
  3. FETI023456789
    ODV000044888
  4. Data precision flag in FETI format are translated into Quality flag or data in ODV spreadsheet as follows.
  5. FETI014789
    ODV014848

Notices and problems

  1. JODC provides observation data together with some metadata, e.g. data originators, research vessels, etc. in JODC standard format (FETI format), but such metadata are omitted from ODV spreadsheet. We recommend that you will download JODC standard format data as well.
  2. As a general rule, units of variables used in JODC standard format are the same as those used by data originators. However, in ODV spreadsheet, unit of each variable is unified so that data can be used as they are. In addition, pressure 'dbar' is converted depth 'm' by the simple formula according to 'Unesco Technical Papers in Marine Science 44 (1983)'.
  3. The extracted data arranged by each vessel and each observation period. Then, the cruise number is attached to the serial data of each vessel. If the interval of observation of a vessel is 5 days or more, each observation is considered to take part in the respective cruise. The station numbers are also attached for convenience. Therefore, the data of one cruise may be divided into one or more cruises, and sometimes it may be the other way around.
